My entire career, I have considered myself a feminist and have focused many of my efforts on advocating for women’s rights based on the equality of the sexes. Early in my academic career, I served as the Chair of the Women’s Issue Committee (WIC) for the National Council of Schools and Programs in Professional Psychology (NCSPP). During my chairship, this committee was instrumental in keeping women issues alive in the minds of top administrators and faculty at the majority of professional psychology doctoral programs in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. As a result, a survey was developed and disseminated by NCSPP’s schools and programs. Results of the study helped determine how training paradigms need to shift to best enable women’s participation in psychology education and training.
In my professional role as a feminist psychologist, I’ve presented at national and international conferences on various women’s issues. I have been particularly interested in alternative family development, media depictions of women worldwide, sex exploitation, and global experiences of violence against women. In March 2021, I had the pleasure of presenting at the United Nation’s NGO Commission on the Status of Women 65 Forum, Virtual Conference on “How has COVID-19 impacted human trafficking and to what extent does a social disrupter, such as a pandemic, put more women and youth at risk for human trafficking” ( link: here). Additionally, I had the pleasure to Guest Co-Edit International Perspectives in Psychology Special Issue: Women During COVID-19, which includes an article, Women Leaders During a Global Crisis: Challenges, Characteristics, and Strengths, authored by Sade E. Soares and myself.
In 2021 I received the APA Division 52 International Psychology Denmark-Reuder Award for Outstanding International Contributions to the Psychology of Women and Gender, and in 2022 I received the New York State Psychological Association, Division of Women’s Issues, Margaret Floy Washburn Award.
